Determine Waterfall Pump Size

Determine Head of Feet

Determine Head Pressure:

Step 1: Measure the distance (to the nearest foot) of the tubing from the pump to the waterfall and divide by 10.

Step 2: Measure the distance (to the nearest foot) of the waterfall from the top to the water's surface. (Head)

Step 3: Add the results from steps 1 and 2 to equal Total Head Pressure.

Example: Total tubing is 10' and the height of waterfall is 5' the required head pressure is equal to 6 feet.

{(10/10) +5} = 6' Head Pressure

Desired Water Flow:

The table below can be used as a good estimate of the required flow rate based on personal preference. Typical desired water flow is about 1,800 gallons per hour (gph) for every foot of width of waterfall discharge (weir).

For Example: Using a smooth waterfall discharge that is 2.5' wide with a desired waterfall thickness of 3/4" thick will require a flow rate of 4,500 gallons per hour.

(2.5' width x 1,800 gph/ft) = 4,500 gph.

Pump needed will produce 4,5000 gph @ 6 feet of head.
