Tetra Hardness Test Kit
General Hardness:
Measures dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. These salts directly influence the regulatory functions of fish, plants and microorganisms. High levels are considered hard, low levels soft.

Carbonate Hardness (aka - Alkalinity, Buffering Capacity):
Alkalinity or Carbonate Hardness (KH) is a measure of the buffering capacity of water, or its ability to resist change in pH. Ponds where alkalinity is allowed to drop too long or too low can often suffer a situation where the pH then "crashes" to levels below 5.0 - leading to very inefficient or total loss of biological filtration and direct irritation or stress on some fish species.

  • More Info
This kit contains:
  • One 10-ml test reagent
  • A test vial
  • Instructions and recommendations

  • Details:
  • In most waters, bicarbonate salts form part of the total water hardness.
  • These bicarbonate salts make up the carbonate hardness or KH value.
  • Bicarbonates have an important function in your overall chemistry of pond water.
  • Acting as a pH buffer, preventing sudden and potentially harmful changes in the acidity or alkalinity of the water.
  • If bicarbonates (low KH value) the release of acidic substances from the natural decomposition of organic material can cause a dangerous reduction in the pH of the water
  • The higher the KH the better pH buffering, but very high value can result in the water becoming alkaline
  • Favorable levels of carbonate hardness are between 3 degrees and 10 degrees dH(degrees of German hardness)

  • View the GH Test Instructions and the KH Test Instructions

Use Pond Salt to help soften the water.
Test for all problematic areas with the Master Test Kit.
