Hornwort is an excellent oxygenator, does not need to be planted, and baby fish love to hide inside of it. Hornworts feathery-green foliage turns almost black in the winter when the plant goes dormant, and will grow as a dense, rootless mass that floats below the surface of the pond throughout the year. This plant produces a very small white flower in the summer that often look more like pollen floating on the surface, than a true flower. Sold in bunches of 5.

Mail Order: What To Expect

Plants you receive by mail need time to adjust. Your plants will arrive as: Bare Root (only root and little to no foliage), Bunches (several stems or groupings of plants) or as a Net Pot (roots with some foliage). Upon arrival, they may not appear lush but given time & proper care, they will flourish!

Planting Instructions

Plant several bunches of Hornwort together submerged in a planter with aquatic planting media or simply tie the bunch to a weight and drop into the desired section of your pond or water garden.

Fertilization is typically not needed for Hornwort as they take excess nutrients from your pond water. If needed, Microbe-Lift® Bloom & Grow™ can be used.

Plant Maintenance

For best results, trim leaves as they begin to turn yellow or brown, remove them completely, discarding them to keep as much excess organic material out of water-body as possible.

Winter Care

When performing fall maintenance tasks, cut back Hornwort to 1" above the pot and submerge back into center of pond. This stops winter die off from entering the pond as decaying debris.
