Pond Snails
The Black Japanese Trapdoor Snail is a great pond cleaner and they have no patterns on their shells but do have tinges of red or orange on their bodies. They never over populate, both good and bad for those who want more.
A neat feature about these snails is that when these snails close up you need a water change! Within a week after the snails refuse to open your fish will start dying.

Upon the arrival of your snails, simply place them in the pond. During shipment it is not unusual for the snails to get pockets of air under their shell. This will cause them to float when you put them in the water. Most of the floaters will work the air out pretty quickly. Sometimes it can take anywhere from a day to as long as a week to get the air out of the shell.

  • The Black Japanese Trapdoor Snails are black in color, body, and shell.
  • These snails are non-invasive and give live birth one to two pea size offspring at a time, not egg layers that overwhelm your pond.
  • These snails are a great asset in keeping algae under control as they groom your plants, planting pots, and watergarden walls.
  • Cannot Ship Snails To California
  • They also cruise the pond bottom and consume decaying matter such as leaves and fish food.
  • The snails do not eat most aquatic plants, or hunt fish eggs. They eat primarily algae.
  • They can also tolerate a reasonable amount of salt in the water.
  • These snails are one of the few larger varieties that can survive the winter in Northern Climates.
  • For snails to have a positive effect on algae growth you should have 20 snails for small watergarden and about 50 or more for a larger watergarden. Farm ponds should have atleast 200 to have a positive effect.
  • For pond and watergarden use at least 1 snail per 3 square feet of pond space.
  • For example:
    If your pond is 9 x 12, multiply 9 x 12=108 then divide the 108 by 3 which equals 36 pond snails.

  • Please Note:
  • There is a minimum order of 20 snails if no plants are being purchased.
  • There is a minimum of 5 snails if ordering snails with a plant order.

  • To ensure a healthy clear pond try our DefensePAC 2000 and also the use of Aeration.
