If this is your first winter season with koi, you may be wondering if koi fish need a heater. Indeed, as temperatures drop and water freezes, koi do start to behave differently. They start to slow down, and you may notice they’re barely touching their food. Is that a bad sign?
The truth is, koi are hardy fish. A koi pond heater can certainly keep water temperatures up, but is it really necessary?
How Koi Survive the Winter
First, let’s look at what happens to koi in cold weather. Koi are cold-blooded. Their body temperature fluctuates with water temperatures– as the pond water cools down, koi naturally begin to move more slowly. This is because their metabolism drops. Once water temperatures dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, they enter torpor. Torpor is a semi-dormant state similar to hibernation.
During this time, koi hardly move. Their digestion stops, as well, and they tend not to eat. You will usually see koi grouped up at the bottom of the pond where water temperatures are warmest. As the water warms back up in the spring, koi gradually resume their normal activity levels.
Pros of Using a Koi Pond Heater for Winter
Some pond owners opt to use a koi pond heater during cooler months. This is especially common in areas with harsh winters. Some of the benefits include:

- Fall clean-up. Once the leaves are off the trees, try to clear the pond of any dead organic material. A good fall cleaning will help minimize water issues later on.
- Use a de-icer. De-icers keep a small area of water from freezing. This allows for vital gas exchange. As organic matter decays, it releases gases that can be toxic for koi if they are not allowed to properly vent.
- Use a water thermometer. When water temperatures drop below 50°F, it is important to stop feeding your koi. The food will go uneaten, and it will create more toxic gases as it decays.
